More than 80% of human information is acquired through vision, and light is the only medium that stimulates the human visual system. In ancient society, humans relied on natural light sources, sunrises and sunsets, and thus thousands of years of evolution have made the current human visual system and the visual perception characteristics and mechanisms based on it. However, in recent years, with the development of modern science and technology, especially the invention and evolution of lighting and display technology, the pattern of human dependence on traditional natural light has completely changed and entered the era of modern light environment. On the one hand, through the control of light, the presentation of specific scenes and even virtual environments can be realized, which greatly enriches the human visual content and thus changes the traditional life and social way; on the other hand, human beings are in artificial light environment and directly face. The time for artificial optical media has increased dramatically, and the burden of visual information perception and processing has increased significantly. According to the latest survey of the 2016 National Vision Health Project, China faces a more serious visual health crisis than the West. The prevalence of myopia in Chinese youth is high, which not only affects the contemporary, but also jeopardizes the future national health quality and has a major impact on the country's social, economic and even national security. Moreover, with the diversification of optical devices and the full development of science and technology, different display technologies, illumination technology and natural light guiding technologies will complement each other and even merge and develop together to build a wider light environment. Therefore, how to create a healthy and comfortable light environment for human beings will become an important part of healthy living and ecological development in the future.

In order to provide more scientific and healthier guidance for the development of future display technologies and the entire light environment science, the Ministry of Science and Technology has set up a “New Display Visual Health Research” project in the national key research and development program “Strategic Advanced Electronic Materials” (Project number :2016YFB0401200). As the only basic research type project in this field, all research funding is allocated to the state. After formal review and expert review, the project was led by Southeast University. Southeast University Display Technology Research Center is the earliest and largest research institute specializing in display technology research in China. The platform data is domestically leading and internationally advanced; the project must grasp the international development trend, and combine with the times and independent innovation.

Yang Bin, director of the High-tech Center of the Ministry of Science and Technology, spoke at the meeting, pointing out that the report of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China expounded the good wishes of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. He also put forward specific and arduous tasks for the majority of science and technology workers to build digital China, manufacturing big countries, and information powers. We must think more about how to improve our research capabilities and research level. We need to start from planning, process management, and system innovation. There is at least one way to improve the ability to research, that is, to pursue an extreme problem. Our standards must exhaust all problems, and each question must have an answer. With such ambitions, we can improve our scientific research level. This is what Chairman Xi said to achieve the realization of global governance. The project should combine the Chinese people's physical characteristics, establish national production standards for display products and foreign product access review mechanisms through national standards, and establish a standard system for protecting Chinese visual health. Director Yang affirmed that the project has made good progress, and pointed out that the No. 152 document issued by the Ministry of Science and Technology in June this year has new management regulations for key R&D projects. The daily management work, annual performance report, and scientific and technological exchanges of the project shall be included in the assessment content at the time of acceptance. The project team shall record and archive the meeting minutes, sign-in forms and evaluation opinions of various scientific and technological activities.

The project will carry out relevant science popularization activities in Beijing and Nanjing in the near future, focusing on the visual health problems of young people and spreading and infiltrating throughout the society. The project establishment and development is a concrete implementation of the green ecological development concept put forward by the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, and an important measure to implement the "Healthy China 2030" Outline. The research results of the project will realize the good wishes of “creating a good production and living environment for the people” through the optimization of display technology and the improvement of the entire light environment.
